Standing in the hotel towering into the clouds, overlooking the beautiful scenery or urban weather through the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, the polluted air walking in the room will greatly reduce the romantic experience of this trip. According to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China's hotel industry is growing at a rate of 134 new stores a day in 2024, but few people notice that these glamorous rooms are becoming a "chronic gas chamber" threatening 0.32 billion business travelers ". The two-year random inspection by the Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association has uncovered the scars of the industry: 70% of newly opened hotels have air pollution, 30% of guest rooms have mold, and TVOC concentration in some rooms exceeds the standard by 200-which means that every resident is paying health tax for the capital-running hotel industry. When the "fast-loading and fast-opening" mode compresses the decoration cycle to 72 hours, and when the manager cuts the air management budget to the intelligent toilet, this battle for the quality of life of hundreds of millions of people may be more urgent than we think!

Today 315, we pay attention to the hotel air quality!

01.Tourism market recovery, new hotels, large-scale growthBecome the hardest hit area of indoor environmental pollution

According to data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the number of domestic tourists reached 5.615 billion in 2024, an increase of 14.8 percent year-on-year. Among them, the number of domestic trips by urban residents was 4.37 billion, an increase of 16.3 percent over the same period last year, while the number of trips by rural residents was 1.245 billion, an increase of 9.9 percent over the same period last year. The total expenditure of domestic tourists reached 5.75 trillion yuan, an increase of 0.84 trillion yuan over the previous year and a year-on-year increase of 17.1 percent. Urban residents spent 4.93 trillion yuan on travel, up 18.0 percent year-on-year, while rural residents spent 0.83 trillion yuan, up 12.2 percent year-on-year. These data not only prove the recovery of the tourism market, but also reflect the trend of residents' consumption upgrading. Ovie Cloud Network (AVC) monitoring data show that in 2024, a total of 346000 hotels (15 and above) nationwide will be open, with 17.67 million rooms and a large hotel stock market. It is worth noting that in terms of market growth, there were 49000 newly opened hotels, an increase of 27.3 percent over the same period last year; the room size was 2.17 million, an increase of 32.3 percent over the same period last year, of which the structure of 3-5 star medium and high-end hotels grew rapidly, accounting for 47.7 percent.

The surge in the number of newly opened hotels should have been good news for the industry. However, while the scale of new hotels (including new decoration, the same below) has increased significantly, the air quality of newly opened hotels is not optimistic. According to the Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association after the comprehensive epidemic (since the beginning of 2023) of the hotel sampling data show that 70% of the newly opened hotels (new or renovated within one year) have more or less air pollution problems, especially the inner windows and windowless rooms are the hardest hit areas, the pollution value exceeds the standard rate of 90%. In addition, 30% of the rooms also have hidden mold growth.

02. Fast loading and fast opening become the main cause of air pollution in hotels

In recent years, the quality of building materials has improved, but the indoor air quality after decoration is far from reaching the advertising gimmick of "moving to a new home immediately after decoration" claimed by some home decoration companies to allow consumers to move in safely.

With the continuous strengthening of supervision in the home decoration and building materials industry, although some decoration materials in newly opened hotels do not meet the standards, they are no longer the main cause of indoor environmental pollution in hotels. What exists now is the hotel management to achieve early opening, shorten the construction period and quickly decorate to become the main cause of indoor environmental pollution in newly opened hotels.
In order to shorten the construction period, the construction party often adopts the mode of "wet operation cross construction". If the previous process is not fully exposed to the environment, the next process will not be carried out directly according to the standard process, which has become the main method for the construction party to improve efficiency and shorten the construction period. Statistics show that 72% of newly-built hotels adopt the "wet wall sealing board" process (construction when the moisture content of the wall is more than 25%). Although the construction period is saved, it is easy to form TVOC (abbreviation of "Total Volatile Organic Compounds", which means total volatile organic compounds) exceeding the standard, and the risk of mold contamination will be increased by 3 times.
In this case, TVOC is one of the three types of pollution that affect indoor air quality. TVOC refers to the organic matter whose saturated vapor pressure exceeds 133.32Pa at room temperature. Its boiling point is 50 ℃ to 250 ℃. It can exist in the air in the form of evaporation at room temperature. Its toxicity, irritation, carcinogenicity and special odor will affect the skin and mucous membrane and cause acute damage to the human body. The World Health Organization (WHO), the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council (NAS/NRC) and other agencies have been emphasizing that TVOC is an important class of air pollutants.

In the Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association, it was detected that the TVOC concentration in a newly opened hotel room in Jing'an District, Shanghai exceeded twice the normal value.

"People's understanding of air management is still relatively one-sided, thinking that as long as formaldehyde does not exceed the standard, the air quality is qualified. However, pollutants such as TVOC and mold also have serious health risks. For example, TVOC is toxic, irritating, and carcinogenic. It may cause symptoms such as headache, chest tightness, cough, and even affect the central nervous system and body temperature regulation. Mold can also cause allergic reactions, respiratory problems, neurological problems, and an increased risk of cancer." Wang Fang, secretary-general of the Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association, said that pollutants such as TVOC and mold are even worse than formaldehyde. They can also cause disease and cause cancer. They are "shadow killers" that the public must pay attention ". In particular, hotels, clubs, long-term rental apartments and cinemas in closed environments, due to the lack of ventilation equipment such as windows, allowing the large-scale existence of pollutants is obviously a right to health of consumers.LeighIrresponsible. And customers will gradually lose because of the bad experience, and ultimately hurt the brand itself.

03. Hotel managers generally do not pay attention to air quality

In terms of priority, hotel managers still generally have the ranking of "hardware> software> catering> service> fragrance> air quality". different hotels also have other indicators or ranking methods, but air quality is always in the back position. The reason for this sort of situation, we believe, should be based on hotel managers as follows cognitive.

The first is to consider air quality as a "hidden indicator", focusing only on facilities or services that are visible or perceptible.
Second, it is believed that there will be no quality problems when building materials meet the standards. However, it is ignored that the volatile substances of various building materials after decoration and the volatile substances of indoor soft clothes will have a comprehensive effect, which can easily form excessive air quality.
The third is that there is a one-sided perception of "formaldehyde = air pollution. Ignore the risk of compound pollution such as TVOC exceeding the standard and mold exceeding the standard.

Four is the widespread lack of attention to indoor air governance. Hotel managers adopt low-price bidding or direct price-keeping methods for hotel air treatment projects to make air treatment a mere formality, some are directly handed over to cleaning companies for direct and simple treatment, some are forged for qualified testing reports, and some are listed as non-essential items in hotel management by hotel management enterprises (including brand chain hotel management enterprises).

04. 315, indoor environment purification industry practitioners bright sword!

In order to protect the public's health and protect consumers' right to know about health, the Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association and the Shanghai Consumer Protection Association have jointly established a complaint hotline 021-66316517.

If consumers have doubts about the air quality of hotels, long-term rental apartments, fully decorated houses, brand home decoration stores or other public places, they can leave a message through the association's "Shanghai Indoor Environment Purification Industry Association" and "Indoor Environment Purification Industry" public number Or telephone contact the association to complain.
